The Sharjah Police on Tuesday launched a month-long traffic awareness campaign.

The drive, called "Our Goal is Your Safety", aims to further improve traffic safety in the emirate.

Motorists and pedestrians have been urged to follow traffic instructions in a bid to reduce reckless driving and fatal accidents.

Sharjah Police are planning to launch 12 traffic campaigns this year and achieve the Ministry of Interior’s goal of making the UAE the safest place in the world for motorists and pedestrians.

Captain Saud Al Shaiba, the Director of Traffic Awareness and Media Department at Sharjah Police, said: “The campaign coincides with the return of the pupils in the second term of the academic session and the beginning of the New Year.”

The campaign can succeed only if members of the community – whether vehicle drivers or pedestrians – get involved in the exercise, he added.

“Our Goal is Your Safety” is a digital campaign and is promoted on social media in multiple languages such as Arabic, English and Urdu to remind motorists and pedestrians about road safety.

Captain Al Shaiba said that drivers should pay attention to the road and should not get distracted while driving. They must always fasten their seat belts and must not speak on their mobile phones while driving, he said. Pedestrians have been urged to cross roads at designated places.

Captain Al-Shaiba underscored the need to intensify the traffic awareness campaign throughout the year, as Sharjah Police are pulling out all stops to educate community members about the importance of safe driving.
