Muscat: Oman currently has 21 road projects under development, according to a senior official at the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Salim bin Mohammed Al Naimi, Undersecretary of Roads at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, said, “There are currently 21 asphalt road projects in development throughout Oman, with a total length of 778 kilometres.”

“Oman’s roads are developed to the best international standards, and our road strategy is constantly being revised to continue meeting global best practices,” he added.

“We have completed 17 asphalt road projects from the end of 2017 to the middle of 2018, the most important of which is the 270 kilometre Batinah Expressway. We also maintain 14,846 kilometres of roads throughout Oman, in addition to 17,000 kilometres of sand roads.”

Al Naimi’s comments were made during a press conference announcing the upcoming International Road Union (IRU) World Congress.

A platform for global decision-makers to exchange ideas, debate solutions and define the future of the transportation and logistics industry, the congress will be organised by the IRU and co-hosted by ASYAD and the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

From the 6th to the 8th of November, government ministers, business executives and logistics experts will come together at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre to network, discuss and explore innovative solutions on road transport and trade.
