Muscat – Under the auspices of HE Mohamed bin Salim Al Tobi, Minister of Environment & Climate Affairs, the Environment Society of Oman (ESO), in association with the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), organized the 7th annual Inter-College Environmental Public Speaking Competition (ICEPSC). More than 165 students from 19 universities across Oman came together to debate environmental issues with like-minded peers. From 40 shortlisted teams, the 4 winning teams will go on to compete in the upcoming ICEPSC regional competition, which is set to be held in Dubai on the 27th and 28th of November 2018.
Suaad Al Harthi, Executive Director at the Environment Society of Oman, said, “Hosting this competition for yet another year has cemented our commitment to shaping the next generation of environmentally concise members of society. This competition serves as a platform for future generations to become ambassadors for the environment. Focusing on developing a deep appreciation of the environment and understanding the challenges facing it through study, research, discussion and debate, this competition enables passionate youth to express their positions and helps them develop ways to protect the environment.”
The winning teams included “Bunya”from Sultan Qaboos University, for “Sustainable Built Environment; Are we achieving it?”, ”Naqaa” from Sultan Qaboos University for ‘Impact of Fashion and Make up Industry on the Environment’’, Kaizen from Sharqiya University for ‘The Future of Agriculture in the Middle East”, and Green Footprint from Military Technology College for ‘The Impact of Wars on the Environment’’.

ESO launched the ICEPSC in 2012 as part of its efforts to motivate students to learn about important environmental issues, build their confidence, and offer them a platform to become ambassadors of sustainable living. Over the past six years, hundreds of teams from throughout the Sultanate have gained confidence in their ability and personality, driving them to strengthen their bond with nature and explore ways to improve their quality of life without compromising future generations. The Environment Society of Oman was founded in March 2004 by Omanis representing different regions and many different professional backgrounds.
