The long-awaited Louvre Abu Dhabi will open its doors to the public on November 11, 2017, the museum’s directors announced at a press conference in Abu Dhabi today.

Designed by award-winning architect Jean Nouvel, the project will feature a top dome that weighs almost the same as the Eiffel Tower and has already been listed among the world’s most anticipated architectural projects in 2017 by London-based newspaper The Times.

“The building is more than magnificent, it is a piece of art itself…Louvre Abu Dhabi showcases the ambition to be a global museum by the virtue of art collection and works of art that will be present,” Jean-Luc Martinez, director of Louvre, Paris who was speaking in French, said at the press conference.

“We are proud that such a museum holds the name of Louvre and embodies the identity of Louvre in France and I hope Manarat Al Saadiyat will be a source of culture to the world.” Martinez said.

The Louvre will be the first of three museums planned at Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District, with the Zayed National Museum and the Guggenheim Museum to follow.

“Louvre Abu Dhabi will showcase world culture and heritage; it will show that the connection in the world is extremely important in our times. Every single visitor to this museum will feel a connection to this museum [and] to his/her culture,” Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, told reporters at the sidelines of the conference.

"We hope that this connectivity enhances every single youthful mind that enters the museum," he added.

The museum will charge 60 UAE dirhams ($16.33) per ticket for adults and it will be free of charge for children under 13 years old, Al Mubarak told reporters, and there will be special rates for students, armed forces and the senior citizens.
