Dubai-based water and wastewater company Metito announced on Sunday the handover of the 150,000 cubic metres/day seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant in East Port Said, located in the northern part of Egypt.

The plant was developed by a consortium of Metito and Orascom at a total cost of $130 million and will cater to East Port Said City, the company said in a press statement.

The project’s land area of 79,000 square metres would accommodate future expansion, the statement noted.

Karim Madwar, Managing Director of Metito Africa, said the project, built with environmental considerations, would meet the drinking water needs of a population of nearly one million.

Atef Abdel Gawad, Projects Director General at Metito Africa, said the desalination plant incorporates pre-treatment using dissolved air flotation (DAF), Ultrafiltration (UF) due to the nature of the seawater which contains a lot of fine-grained suspended matter.
