  • The Taweelah Plant is a significant step towards developing the energy infrastructure and enhancing production efficiency.
  • Raising the proportion of water desalinated by reverse osmosis to 30% by 2022.

Abu Dhabi: – The Department of Energy, the Government Authority tasked with driving success and sustainability in Abu Dhabi’s energy sector, announced on Monday October 29, 2018, that it had started assessing the tenders and price bids proposed for the Taweelah Desalination Plant.

His Excellency Eng. Mohammed Juma bin Jarsh Al Falasi, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, attended the bid assessment process, along with several high-ranking managers and corporate executives, as well as a committee of experts and representatives from companies within the sector.

Seven tenders were received and opened, including proposals from ACWA Power, as well as from a number of coalitions, namely: Suez International Power S.A. Dubai Branch (Engie), Sumitomo Corporation, Marubeni Corporation, Sumitomo Corporation / Veolia Middle East, Valoriza Agua, Utico FZC / IDB Infrastructure Fund II B.S.C.(c), Cobra Instalaciones y Servicios, Orascom Construction, Samsung Engineering Co, Acciona Agua S.A, Pal Group of Companies LLC,), Suez International, Sojitz Corporation and N V / Besix SA, Ltd. The Department is expected to register the lowest production cost of AED8.26 per 1,000 gallons.

H.E. Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, Chairman of the Department of Energy, said: “The Taweelah Desalination Plant is a significant step towards developing the energy infrastructure and enhancing production efficiency by embracing the most advanced technologies and scientific solutions and channelling them towards ensuring a sustainable supply of water. The Plant forms part of an integrated strategy for the energy sector, which seeks to optimise the use of natural resources and strengthen partnerships with the private sector to achieve the objectives of the UAE Energy Strategy 2050.” “The project uses reverse osmosis to desalinate sea water,” H.E. explained; “it supports our efforts and future plans, keeping us abreast of the rapid scientific developments in the sector, especially considering that recent studies have indicated that 64% of desalination operations in the world use reverse osmosis technology. Abu Dhabi, for its part, currently generates 13% of its desalinated water using this technology – a proportion we look forward to increasing to 30% by 2022 as we develop these ambitious projects.” The Taweelah Desalination Plant project covers financing, development, construction, operations, maintenance and ownership of the Plant, which has a production capacity of 200 million gallons of water per day, in addition to the development and maintenance of the Plant’s infrastructure, which will be part of the Taweelah Water and Electricity Complex, located 45 km north of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Unlike thermal desalination plants, facilities relying on reverse osmosis technology do not need to be part of a power plant, which helps support a future strategy rooted in maximising the use of scarce natural resources. This type of desalination plant is also eco-friendly: It has the lowest carbon footprint and prevents the loss of energy in the form of heat. It also has no effect on sea water temperatures.
