Muscat: The Environment Society of Oman (ESO) is calling on all individuals, communities, ministries, businesses and organizations to join millions of people across the world and support the 2020 Earth Hour. The initiative raises awareness over the vast environmental issues that Oman and the world faces, along with how much energy can be saved on a global scale from turning off power for a mere hour. ESO has seen a huge success in joining the global Earth Hour, a campaign aimed at demonstrating the concerns over the future of the planet by doing something so simple, yet remarkable, at 8:30 pm on the last Saturday in March.
Starting as a symbolic “lights out” event in Sydney in 2007, WWF’s Earth Hour has grown to become the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment, reaching more than 180 countries and territories in 2019. The global theme this year continues to be “Connect2Earth”, which focuses on raising awareness about global biodiversity and its importance to ecosystems. In solidarity for this message, ESO is asking the community to join others worldwide and turn off all non-essential lighting on Saturday 28 March from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
ESO has been celebrating the worldwide movement of Earth Hour with a month-long social media campaign during March, the 20 Day Challenge, posting daily challenges to encourage all to make more sustainable choices as consumers. Suaad Al Harthi, Executive Director of ESO, said, “The goal is to encourage us all to go beyond Earth Hour and reflect on how our day-to-day actions can negatively impact the environment. We have a shared responsibility to protect the world around us. We would like to encourage everybody to challenge themselves to think about the decisions they make as consumers, in particular, saying no to single-use plastic bags, straws, plastic bottles, cutlery, plates and cups and properly disposing of cigarette butts. We also called on people to support ESO’s efforts by becoming members.”

The Environment Society of Oman was founded in March 2004 by Omanis representing different regions and many different professional backgrounds. The Society is the first of its kind in Oman and works by promoting conservation and environmental awareness in all sectors of society. In February 2009 ESO was accepted as a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and was chosen to represent environmental organizations from West Asia at UNEP.
