Runners from Bahrain will take part in an international marathon to support Beirut following August’s tragic port blast.

In light of the explosion a virtual 5km charity race organised by the Beirut Marathon Association will run until Thursday with many organisations from all over the world taking part.

The marathon titled ‘Embrace Beirut’ is a global effort to help raise funds for the Lebanese Red Cross working on the ground supporting families in the aftermath of the incident.

Bahrain Social and Road Runners will be holding their charity runs today and on Wednesday after watching a moving video from athletes in Beirut appealing for support. “Beruit is calling out to you,” a runner pleads.

Bahrain Social Runners captain Tawfeeq Abbas told the GDN that they are expecting a good turnout. Covid-19 protocols will be observed. The event is being staged today at 5pm at the Almoayyed Village in Riffa and a second event will be at National Stadium at the same time.

“We have hundreds of members who take part in our exercises but in these situations we have chosen to get as many people as possible, get a nice respectable number which includes our president Shaikh Ebrahim bin Abdulla bin Khalid Al Khalifa and our chief Emad Almoayyed and expatriates and our Lebanese members,” said Mr Abbas.

“The event will continue until October 8 so anyone can register and do their part to help, we usually go on runs on these days so we wanted it to be part of this international event so we can help support the Lebanese community,” he said.

Virtual runs are online challenges that can be run anywhere, anytime, with anyone – at your own pace.

The GDN reported in August that Bahrain has sent a shipment of urgent humanitarian relief aid to Lebanon. It was sent by the Royal Humanitarian Foundation and that the Bahrain Red Crescent Society (BRCS) announced its donation of $50,000 to the Lebanese Red Cross as part of Bahrain’s relief contributions to Lebanon.

The BRCS also launched the ‘Bahrain helps Beirut’ campaign, aiming to collect donations and providing relief, medical, health and psychological support for the Lebanese people.

Runners and joggers are urged to visit the event’s website and register for $30. Supporters can also donate any amount they like without having to take part.
