UAE - Ninety-one per cent of the total cases handled by the public prosecution in Abu Dhabi last year involved major and minor crimes, according to authorities.

The latest figures released by the Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution showed that they had received 96,155 cases in 2018, out of which 86,000 cases were criminal in nature. A

According to the report, 96,099 of the total cases have been referred to court, indicating a 99.5 per cent achievement or completion rate.

The figures also showed that in the 69,752 prosecution cases referred to Abu Dhabi courts, 97 per cent of the accused were convicted and only three per cent were acquitted.

"Despite handling a big number of cases, public prosecution officials managed to complete investigations into almost all the cases in time," authorities said during a meeting on Tuesday.

The office has also announced the launch of the first Excellence Award for the Public Prosecution this year. The award, which aims to motivate employees and improve productivity, will be based on the culture of innovation and quality.

Ali Mohammed Al Baloushi, attorney-general of Abu Dhabi, reminded employees of the public prosecution office about the "great task" entrusted to them.

"You are the protectors of the law, who are keen to implement it. You are the custodians of the freedom and dignity of every person living in Abu Dhabi. And this award is a great honour that you all deserve."

Among the people whom the public prosecution deals with every day could be their friends and relatives, but the office has always strived to treat everyone equally to ensure justice for all, Al Baloushi said.

According to the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, the government has done a commendable work in supporting the department in their bid to strengthen the rule of law and protection of rights of individuals and the society.
