Streets lights across Sharjah are being turned off during the National Disinfection Programme hours to ensure that residents adhere to #StayHome directives.

The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) announced on Monday that it launched the initiative that will see 3,000 street lights turned off from 8pm to 6am when the nation-wide disinfection programme is carried out.

The initiative will help the emirate preserve its natural resources, Dr Rashid Al Leem, chairman of the Sewa, said. During the sterilisation hours, the streets are free of residents and vehicles, thus reducing the need for all the streetlights in the emirate, the official explained.

The sterilisation programme is carried out to stop the spread of Covid-19. During the hours specified by each emirate, residents are not allowed to step out of their homes unless it is for buying groceries or medicines or to perform jobs in a vital sector.

Dr Al Leem said the Sewa decision will help reduce utility consumption rates in the emirate.
