TOKYO, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Japan's aluminium industry by2050 aims to cut CO2 emissions by 78% versus 2017 levels byraising the use of recycled metal to 75% from the current 48%,the Japan Aluminium Association said on Monday.

The industry also aims to boost local demand by 43% to 6.02million tonnes a year by 2050 from 4.22 million tonnes in 2019by expanding its use in segments including transportation andconstruction, it said as part of a new long-term vision.

"With the new vision, we intended to make a strongimpression of the fine characteristics of aluminium such as highenvironmental performance and show our strong will to boost ourpresence," Japan Aluminium Association Chairman Ichiro Okamototold a news conference.

Okamoto is also the president of Nippon Light Metal HoldingsCo Ltd 5703.T .

The new outlook also calls for Japan's aluminium industry toincrease the use of secondary metal in rolled products andextrusions to 50% by 2050 from the current 10% throughdevelopment of various technologies including involving thesorting of scrap.

The industry group is also counting on innovation insmelting and refining technology by smelters to make refinedingots with lower CO2 emissions to help achieve its CO2reduction target, it said.
