ArabFinance: A consortium of national and international companies led by Hassan Allam has been awarded the rights to operate services for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), the cabinet announced on March 4th. The consortium includes companies from Egypt, France, the UK, and the UAE. The names of the companies have not been disclosed.

Negotiations to grant the GEMs management rights started in mid-2018. Eight international alliances applied, of which five passed the pre-qualification stage.

Of the five, three consortia were later selected: one led by Hassan Allam; a consortium of Orascom Construction and an unnamed French company; and another led by Kuwaits Al Kharafi, Atef Moftah, the general supervisor of the GEM project and surrounding area, told Enterprise.

A final contract with Hassan Allam should be signed within 45 days.

The GEM, located in Giza, is expected to open to the public in H2 2021, according to Tourism and Antiquities Minister Khaled el Anany, Youm7 reported in December 2020.

The opening has already been postponed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and should suffer new delays if a second wave hits the country.

Set to be the largest archeological museum in the world, the GEM will exhibit the first full tomb collection of King Tutankhamun. Over 50,000 artifacts will be displayed at the museum.
