Amman: Jordan's national exports retreated by 12.7 per cent in the first quarter of the current year while imports edged up by 4 per cent in the same period, according to official figures.

The drop in exports pushed the country's trade deficit to expand to 13 per cent, according to data released by the Department of Statistics. During the January-March period, the Kingdom's national exports were enough to cover 32 per cent only of imports compared with 38 per cent in the corresponding period last year.

In terms of value, the three-month exports amounted to JD1.161 billion compared with JD1.285 billion in the same period last year, indicating a decline of 10.7 per cent. The value of imports stood at JD3.537 billion.
