According to the latest "Open Doors" Report, Number of UAE nationals enrolled at U.S. institutions of higher education in the 2013-14 academic year grew to 2,784, up from 2,256 the previous year
Abu Dhabi - The number of Emirati high school graduates pursuing higher studies in the United States grew once again last year, up 23.4% over the previous figure, according to the latest U.S. report on international academic mobility.
The "Open Doors 2014" report, published by the Institute of International Education (IIE), states that the number of UAE nationals enrolled at U.S. institutions of higher education in the 2013-14 academic year grew to 2,784, up from 2,256 the previous year.
More than 90 percent of all Emirati students studying in the U.S are on a scholarship, with the majority coming from a public school back ground. Student mobility has increased as a result of government scholarships available to students at the graduate and undergraduate levels, both locally and overseas.
The Abu Dhabi Education Councils' 'Guidance and Scholarship Division' offers students from the UAE the opportunity to gain international knowledge and experience through a suite of international scholarships designed to support their academic studies abroad. Currently 1380 students have joined the program in the UAE and abroad, and 100 scholars graduate every year from leading universities.
Scholarship granting institutions have developed strategies to reach students during high school to raise awareness of potential education opportunities, in turn helping drive the Emiratisation policies in place by the respective government bodies and private sector companies.
Supported by the U.S. Embassy Abu Dhabi, EducationUSA will host representatives from up to 25 American universities in a dedicated pavilion offering educational advice to visitors at NAJAH, which takes place from October 27th to 29th at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. Visitors can expect to meet universities such as Iowa State University, Saint Louis University and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
Mr. Ali Lejlic, Counselor for Press and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi said; "We were proud to see a 23 percent increase in the number of Emirati students, according to the most recent annual Open Doors report. The number of Emiratis studying in the United States has increased every year since 2006, but this is the biggest jump over that timeframe. It's great to see more and more local students recognize the quality and value of American higher education, for English learning, undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate opportunities."
