A coffee shop manager has been fined for violating precautionary measures in place to prevent the spread of the deadly coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

The Bahraini owner was fined BD1,000 by the Lower Criminal Court yesterday.

The coffee shop was also fined BD2,000.

The defendant, aged in his 30s, was found guilty of breaking Covid-19 rules, by allowing more than six people to sit at a table and allowing more than 50 per cent of table capacity to be used at the coffee shop in Manama.

“The Public Prosecution received a notification from the public health department about a lack of social distancing at the coffee shop,” read the ruling.

“The coffee shop manager allowed more than six people to sit at a table and allowed more than 50 per cent of the capacity allowed to seat customers at a table.

“The Public Prosecution received the information yesterday and carried out the procedures to send the defendant to stand trial at the Lower Criminal Court.

“The court then found the defendant guilty of the charges.”

This was part of an ongoing crackdown on violations of health safety measures during and after New Year celebrations.

Authorities previously said that the violators would be handed swift rulings by the specialised courts the same day they stand trial to deter others from committing violations.

Meanwhile, Health Ministry assistant under-secretary for public health and member of the National Medical Taskforce for Combating the Coronavirus Dr Mariam Al Hajri has urged all citizens and residents to adhere to the guidelines and precautionary measures recommended by the task force.

It was not possible to succeed in confronting the pandemic if people were lax or reckless that may put the health of the community at risk. She called on everyone to remain vigilant and cautious to maintain the continuous success of the national efforts being exerted to limit the spread of the virus.

The kingdom has provided a pioneering model for an effective response to the pandemic on carefully studied and accurate bases, earning it wide international praise, she added.

Dr Al Hajri urged people to limit the size of gatherings at home and in outdoor spaces, avoid contacts, always wear face masks when outside the home and adhere to all preventive and precautionary measures.
