Mall of Qatar opened its doors on Saturday with more than 150,000 visitors turning up to witness the grand celebration marked by 2,000 artists in over 20 shows.

Spread over 500,000 square metres, the $1.48-billion mall houses over 500 brands of high street fashion, footwear, food, health and beauty, pharmacy, optics and home furnishing brands, including over 100 food and beverage outlets.

It also houses a 19-screen megaplex operated by Novo, which includes VIP screens and in-gourmet food services. The cinemas are equipped with IMAX’s laser projection and sound systems, latest 4D projection technology with special effects and seats that move in synchronization with the movie.

“It was a day filled with magnificent experiences and great times that truly set the tone for what is yet to come. We are really looking forward to welcoming more guests from near and far,” Rony Mourani, general manager, Mall of Qatar, said in a press statement.

Global consultancy AT Kearney last year said that Qatar was emerging as the most attractive market for retailers in the Middle East with total retail sales at $12.4 billion.

Earlier this month, Dubai-based Al-Futtaim Group opened its $1.8-billion Doha Festival City which was spread over 165,000 square metres.

Forecast to receive over 20 million visitors a year, The Oasis at Mall of Qatar has been designed for live shows with transformative lighting and sound. In addition, it has a 360-degree revolving theatrical stage where up to 25 dancers, singers, actors and acrobats can perform live.

The mall has car parking facility for 10,000 vehicles. Its food court and dining areas surrounding the Oasis have a seated capacity of 2,600 people. The Mall is also conjoined with the 5-star AlRayyan Hotel which is operated by Hilton under its Curio brand.

In addition to the performance by British classical crossover vocal group Il Divo, the opening celebrations were marked by performances by Shaolin Warriors and Dinosaur Zoo live among others.
