A UAE factory has been fined and shut down after it was found making fake goods worth 2 million UAE dirhams ($544,000), it has been confirmed.

The manufactured products in question were counterfeits of cleaning materials from international brands, according to Ajman’s Department of Economic Development (DED) who made the seizure.

Approximately 700,000 filled and empty packs of fake goods were confiscated from the factory, along with the filling and packing machines used in the illegal activity.

“The factory was fined and shut down, and all legal proceedings were taken,” DED-Ajman said in a statement on Wednesday.

According to Hassan Ali Al Shehhi, director of the anti-commercial fraud department, the seizure is part of DED’s campaign against commercial fraud.

“The confiscation is part of the efforts of DED’s control and consumer protection department to control markets and economic establishments and enhance commercial protection and consumer protection,” Al Shehhi said.

Cheap copies of famous brands have been seized around the country after several surveillance operations. The trade of fake goods costs the Gulf economies billions of US dollars a year.

In 2008 alone, the region lost about $18 billion to counterfeit trade, compared with around $88 billion in the whole Arab world and $2.2 trillion globally, according to the DED in Abu Dhabi.
