The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) will instal 50 new electric vehicle charging stations in the northern regions of the UAE in two months.

Twelve of the planned 'green' stations will be for express charging, while 38 stations will be for medium speed charging, according to a top official.

Mohammed Saleh, director-general of the authority, said the new stations will give a boost to the usage of clean energy. "Fewa has received several requests for installing green stations. We first assess the suitability of these sites considering the geographical distribution. The move will diversify Fewa revenue sources."

Charging electric vehicles will be free until 2020, he added. "Up to 80 per cent of the batteries can be charged at express stations within 20 to 45 minutes."

The express charging stations will be installed at petrol stations on highways, he explained. "Vehicles can be charged at medium speed charging stations within two to four hours."

Saleh said electric vehicles can run for a distance of 120 to 500km as per the battery type and size or capacity.
