Work on expanding Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Highway is underway as part of a plan to ease congestion and ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

Under the first phase, a fourth lane will be added to widen the section linking the Isa Town and Tubli flyovers for Manama and Muharraq-bound traffic.Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf yesterday inspected the project.

According to official statistics,115,000 vehicles on average use the section of the highway near Adhari Park every day – 52,000 heading from East to West and 63,000 in the opposite direction.

The capacity of the highway will rise to 8,800 vehicles in each direction on completion of the project, up from 6,000 at present.

The 3.6km expansion project which costs BD1.69 million is being financed by the Kuwaiti Fund for Economic Development as part of a Gulf financial support package.

The minister also announced a plan to turn Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Highway into a four-lane artery in both directions. Bids for the project will be invited once the financial package is approved, the ministry said.
