Dubai, UAE : In partnership with Dubai Municipality, the UAE’s second ever ‘plogging’ event took place in Dubai on 20 November. The initiative, titled GEMS Ploggers and organised by the GEMS Global Ambassadors’ Society, saw four groups of 50 volunteers each from 12 GEMS Education schools gather at Mamzar Beach, Sunset Beach, Umm Suqeim Beach and Al Mina Beach to participate in an inspiring joint sustainability-fitness drive.

Not only did participants clean up the beaches and raise awareness of the damaging impact of plastic pollution, but they also used the occasion to celebrate the UAE’s 50th year ahead of National Day as well as the 30x30 Dubai Fitness Challenge.

Asha Alexander, Principal of GEMS Legacy School and Executive Leader – Climate Change at GEMS Education, congratulated the young student leaders involved in the enterprise: “We are amazed at the overwhelming response of the 200 student ploggers from 12 schools, and their active leadership in achieving sustainable goals prioritising physical fitness and health for themselves and the planet.

“Our sincere gratitude to all the GEMS principals of the participating schools for encouraging their students to lead this change and contribute to building a cleaner and healthier planet. We also thank Dubai Municipality for their patronage and extended support in our plogging initiatives, and in our modest efforts in taking forward the vision of the leaders of the UAE, ahead of the country’s hosting of COP28 in 2023.”

The GEMS Global Ambassadors’ Society, which also arranged the country’s first plogging event held in September, is a collaborative community created with the goal of spreading awareness, taking concerted actions and providing innovative solutions for achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Plogging is an organised activity that first started in Sweden around 2016 and quickly gained momentum globally. The name is a combination of two Swedish verbs – ‘plocka upp’ (pick up) and ‘jogga’ (jog) – to form the new verb ‘plogga’. As a workout, it provides variation in body movements by adding bending, squatting, and stretching to the main act of cleaning a public environment.
