People with disabilities are set to be given priority in government housing.

Parliament public utilities and environment affairs committee, chaired by Mohammed Buhamood, yesterday recommended the go-ahead to a proposal to move people with disabilities to the top of the waiting list for government homes.

Committee members also suggested that such people be given available homes with necessary adjustments being made to accommodate their disability.

Meanwhile, a proposal to double the BD100 monthly housing allowance given after five years of waiting from the date of registration for social homes to BD200 after 10 years has been put on hold awaiting feedback from the government.

It comes as the parliamentary housing probe committee, chaired by Ali Ishaqi, met Housing Minister Bassem Al Hamer yesterday to discuss fair distribution policies and procedures.
