MANAMA: HSBC has appointed Christopher Russell as its new chief executive in Bahrain, succeeding Melika Betley, who was previously appointed as CEO of HSBC Bank Oman SAOG.

Mr Russell’s appointment comes after required regulatory approvals, said a statement from the bank.

Joining HSBC Bahrain from HSBC New Zealand where he has been CEO since January 2016, Mr Russell has extensive international experience in the financial services industry, the last 15 years of which have been with HSBC in a number of leadership roles.

“It is a privilege to be given the opportunity to serve as CEO of HSBC in Bahrain, a market in which we have supported economic and social development for 76 years and where, thanks to our strong foundations and deep experience, there is an opportunity for us to support our customers in a new period of growth,” Mr Russell said.

Abdulfattah Sharaf, group general manager, CEO HSBC UAE and head of international, said: “I am confident that in Christopher we have found a successor to Melika who will lead HSBC Bahrain in its next phase of growth by leveraging HSBC’s global network and our deep roots in this region to connect our Bahraini customers to opportunities around the world, and to connect global investors to the significant potential that exists in the kingdom.”

HSBC has been in Bahrain since 1944 and offers a full suite of personal and wholesale banking services and products, including a market leading securities and custody service, trade financing and liquidity and cash management.
