Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) continues to demonstrate its long-standing commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and contributing positively to society. As such, Green Globe, the highest standard for sustainability worldwide, has awarded DWTC its inaugural certification in recognition of its dedication to sustainable management and operations. This award marks DWTC as the first and only events venue in the Middle East to be certified by Green Globe.

“In line with Dubai’s strategic initiatives and tremendous strides in transitioning towards a green economy, the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) is proud to be the first convention and exhibition centre in the region to be certified by Green Globe.  DWTC has been an advocate in implementing viable sustainable strategies and continues to remain agile in developing initiatives that contribute to the green transformation of the MICE sector in the Middle East.  Today, we stand at a crucial stage, where sustainability and environmental impact are among key priorities globally – and with growing demand for a shift towards sustainable practices, our efforts continue to support Dubai in its journey towards a greener future”, said His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General, Dubai World Trade Centre Authority (DWTCA) and Dubai Tourism.

Dubai World Trade Centre has adopted a set of effective policies and strategies that integrate efforts to achieve sustainability across the venue.

The Green Meeting Package has been developed to minimise environmental impacts and the carbon footprint of client meetings covering all aspects – from the origin of all food consumed to the use of paper and energy.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility efforts, DWTC is an ongoing supporter of the UAE Food Bank initiative and continues to donate unused food from events to the food bank located in Dubai. To date, nearly 2,000 families and 8,000 workers have benefitted from DWTC’s food contributions, which has earned the company the Dubai Municipality Food Bank Award for three consecutive years. The award demonstrates DWTC’s commitment to fostering a culture of giving and social responsibility in the country, as well as preserving the environment.

DWTC has also developed an active Waste Reduction and Redirection programme, part of which included training 700 staff members at DWTC on waste management. To encourage everyone to embrace the notion of reduce, reuse and recycle, DWTC has developed ‘green guides’, which advise organisers and contractors on how to run and build sustainable exhibition stands.
