Cooperation continues to expand beyond economy and energy

Abu Dhabi, UAE – The UAE-Japan Friendship Committee for Women's Career Development (FCW), which seeks to empower women in the oil and gas industry, has met for the seventh time, in Abu Dhabi, under the patronage of its President, H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation.

The meeting – held under the theme "Empowering Women Across Continents" – was led by H.E. Dr. Maitha bint Salem Al Shamsi, Minister of State and Advisor to the Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation; Tsuyoshi Nakai, Chief Executive Officer of the Japan Cooperation Center Petroleum (JCCP); and Fatima Al Nuaimi, Acting CEO at ADNOC LNG.

The opening day commenced with the opening of an art exhibition, at the Emirates Palace hotel – entitled “Dimensions of UAE-Japan Cooperation Go Beyond Oil and Trade” – featuring a collection of Emirati and Japanese artwork that pays respect to each nation’s deep heritage.

During the day, FCW members also participated in a range of activities, at ADNOC Group’s HQ, including a recap of the FCW’s 2017 commitments; an update on ADNOC’s Al Rumaitha field project and its role in empowering women in the oil and gas industry; introductions to the ADNOC Youth Council and ADNOC Leadership Development Program; and a tour of Panorama, ADNOC’s digital command center. The day also featured a wide range of guest speakers and FCW member workshops designed to foster deeper collaboration.

H.E. Dr. Al Shamsi said: “We would like to thank H.H. Sheikha Fatima for her continuous support for empowering women in their chosen professions. Her tireless efforts reinforce not only the commitments we have made here in the UAE, but the commitments our Japanese friends have made as we work together on this important cause.”

The second day of the seventh meeting was spent at Khalifa University, where members engaged with young students to learn more about their academic experience and encourage them to explore STEM careers. FCW members also observed student presentations and engaged in joint student-FCW member workshops specifically developed to deepen engagement with the next generation of female leaders.

Nakai said: “For seven years, FCW members’ efforts have contributed to stronger women’s empowerment policies in both Japan and UAE. This is something we’re very proud of, and it has deepened our special relationship significantly. I sincerely respect H.H. Shaikha Fatima for all she has done to encourage women and give them more opportunities to enhance their contributions to their companies and society.”

Al Nuaimi said: “Hosting our Japanese friends for our FCW meeting is a celebratory occasion that fosters deep, constructive, meaningful engagement. It’s an opportunity to learn from one another, share our experiences and further promote the role of women in the workplace. With the endorsement of ADNOC’s leadership and through international partnerships such as the UAE-Japan Friendship Committee for Women’s Career Development, together we can inspire and encourage women across the globe to reach for, and achieve, their true potential.”

The final day of the meeting, held at Sheikh Khalifa Energy Complex – attended by Kanji Fujiki, Ambassador of Japan to the UAE – featured several keynote speeches by FCW leaders and guest speakers, as well as working group sessions designed to tackle issues critical to the Committee’s mission – among them, the transition from empowerment to diversity, career-path development and work-style reform – informing the action plan needed to achieve the FCW’s objectives through the coming year.

The Friendship Committee for Women Career Development (FCW) held its first meeting in 2015 under the initiative of Dr. Al Shamsi for ADNOC and JCCP to cooperate on providing support to women who work in the oil sectors in the UAE and Japan.
