Muscat - Wastewater services will reach 80 per cent of the areas in the Muscat Governorate by 2022.
This was stated by Hussain Hassan AbdulHussain, CEO of Haya Water, on Tuesday on the sidelines of presentation of the latest development of the wastewater projects.
“Due to growth in population and increase in the number of residential units in the governorate, there has been a significant demand for more wastewater services. This has led to an increase in projects’ expansion and extension in execution time,” AbdulHussain told Observer. The meeting was held under the auspices of Ali Khalfan al Jabri, Under-Secretary of Ministry of Information.
AbdulHussain said there have been a number of challenges in the execution of projects.
“Overlapping of services with each other, lack of accurate maps showing the path of other services, steady growth of population and change of land use are some of the major hindrances,” he said.
Some projects get delayed because of the performance of some contractors as the local market does not have sufficient number of specialised contractors for such complex projects, he said.
“Prolonged delay in excavation permit procedures very often hinders the progress of large projects,” he said, adding: “Some people do not realise the importance and nature of the wastewater project.”
However, Haya Water seeks to achieve its objectives in a timely manner and in accordance with the schedule prepared in advance, taking into account the construction boom and population growth witnessed by Muscat Governorate, the CEO said.
According to him, Haya Water promotes its projects in the economic forums in order to encourage foreign construction companies to be part in these projects. The company is also working in collaboration with other authorities to standardise geographical information systems in order to facilitate permits and reduce costs.
Haya Water is currently treating approximately 170,792 cubic metres of sewage water a day in Muscat Governorate.
According to the CEO, the number of customers who have connected their properties to the sewage networks in Muscat Governorate in 2016 stood at 86,329 with an increase of 23 per cent, while 17,035 customers have utilised the same service in the remaining governorates, except Dhofar and Sohar.
At the same time, the company is operating 11 sewage treatment plants (STPs) in addition to 58 plants in other governorates, except Dhofar, with a total capacity of 52,425 m3/ day.
Haya Water will cover other governorates according to the company-approved master plan which takes into consideration the expansion of cities and the rapid growth of population.
