UAE: The activities of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum were launched today with the participation of the UAE as a platinum sponsor of the event. The UAE delegation is headed by the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). The UAE participation in this major global event organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) aims to highlight the UAE’s achievements in the field Digital transformation and its great progress in the ICT sector that has a key role in overcoming the special circumstances imposed by the pandemic.

In his opening speech, H.E. Eng. Majed Al Mesmar, TDRA’s Deputy Director General for Telecommunication Sector, said: “Today we meet at a new stage of the World Summit on the Information Society. This is an event that will become a milestone in the process of making a better future, based on ICT and digital transformation. I am pleased to be virtually with you as a representative of my country, the United Arab Emirates. The UAE has always been a strong supporter of the WSIS Forum and all relevant international events in accordance with the belief of our wise leadership that we can use digital technologies to achieve common humanitarian goals and build more prosperous societies. Further, we can benefit from digital technologies by turning them into generators of sustainable development based on knowledge, innovation and creativity.”

H.E. Al Mesmar added: “This year, the UAE continues its opportune return to normalcy, being one of the most successful countries in controlling the spread of the pandemic. We take this opportunity to invite you all to attend the UAE's landmark event, Expo 2020 in October in Dubai. Come and let’s share together the joy of returning to normal life through various activities that confirm our common resolve to live in the present and shape the future we wish for our upcoming generations.”

The UAE’s sponsorship of this major global event embodies its great role in supporting global initiatives aimed at helping other countries in their pursuit of digital transformation and the sustainable development goals, in order to achieve the United Nations motto “Leave no one behind”.

This year's Forum addresses many key issues such as ICT and senior citizens, ICT and youth, electronic security, ICT and accessibility for people of determination, and emerging technologies for sustainable development.

WSIS Forum 2021 is the largest annual global gathering of “ICT for Development” community. The WSIS Forum, co-organized by ITU, UNESCO, UNDP and UNCTAD, in close collaboration with all WSIS Action Line Facilitators/Co-Facilitators, has proven to be an efficient mechanism for coordination of multi- stakeholder implementation activities, information exchange, creation of knowledge, sharing of best practices and continues to provide assistance in developing multi-stakeholder and public/private partnerships to advance development goals.

About the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA)

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) was established in the UAE according to the Federal Law by Decree No. 3 of 2003, focusing on two main fields: regulating the telecommunications sector, and enabling government entities’ digital transformation.

In regulation, TDRA’s role focuses on ensuring excellent telecom services, developing the ICT sector, protecting the stakeholders’ interests, implementing relevant policy and regulatory frameworks, developing human resources and promoting research and development, to achieve the UAE’s regional and global leading position in the telecommunications sector.
