London: ProjectSet, a London-based edtech enterprise, today announced the winners of Innovation Challenge for Entrepreneurship 2021 (ICE-21) – a virtual hackathon on Innovation and Entrepreneurship for University students in GCC. More than 250 students from 36 universities across the region participated in the hackathon with a third of the teams comprising students from multiple universities.

Four teams – Coconut Concrete, GulfAI, GulfCrypt and Social Clout – comprising students from Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, American University in Dubai, Canadian University In Dubai, Rochester Institute of Technology and Sultan Qaboos University claimed the top honours. The winners were selected by an independent panel of judges on the final day of the six-week event during which the participants worked on ideas, plans and prototypes on a range of businesses including Fintech, Energy & Environment, Mobility, Health & Wellness, AI & Robotics and Social Impact. The teams went through a structured program including mentor sessions, skill clinics and keynotes from partner organisations such as CEBC, MIT, Nissan, Renault, SAP and Tetrapak.

Commenting on ICE-21, Mr. Ahmed Samir Elbermbali, Managing Director of Clean Energy Business Council (CEBC) said “One of the main challenges students face is that disconnect between what they study and the real-world applications and challenges. Platforms like ICE-21 fill in this gap by connecting students with the private sector to solve real challenges and get mentorship from industry leaders and open their horizons". Dhruva Banerjee, the CEO of ProjectSet, said “We are delighted to see such a strong engagement from the student and employer community across the GCC. It is an endorsement of our innovative model to address the skills gap through effective employer-student connections. We plan to bring other impactful programs in the coming months”.

The winning teams will be invited to compete with peers from other parts of the world later this year. ICE-21 is a part of a portfolio of solutions offered by ProjectSet to equip students with soft skills that are essential to the future of work. These programs steer students through mentored projects in partnership with business leaders and universities.
