Sharjah: In line with His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, vision to create scientific partnerships between the private sector, government agencies and academic institutions, Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTI Park), along with SAP Mena launched the “Sharjah Mobility Accelerator”, a month-long series of workshops aimed to find innovative solutions for a smoother commute to Sharjah Airport.
The focus of these workshops was to develop and create innovative tools to address the difficulties faced by the commuters on the road. The workshops saw participants from Rafid, Sharjah Police, Sharjah RTA, Arup Group, Arada and students from American University of Sharjah (AUS) and University of Sharjah (UOS).
The participants were split in groups, each consisting of three students, two or three representatives from government and private sectors and one from SAP.
Each team had to find solutions by empathizing with a fictional character as a model for a road user.
One of the teams came up with design applications on the smartphone where a range of solutions and options are introduced to road users to facilitate their access to their destinations; another came up with realistic solutions by expanding the road by adding new routes through intelligent machines by moving roadblocks and expanding the use of mass transport; a third team went through field research by communicating with different age groups and the issues they face on the road.
The first phase of this month-long series ended with a compilation of all the solutions and the proposed results from these studies, which will be made into an integrated report to be presented to the concerned departments.
His Excellency Hussain Al Mahmoudi, CEO of SRTI Park, stressed the importance of this project, the results it seeks by discussing the best practices of Sharjah International Airport Road and involving all parties and community sectors related to this road, either directly or by official supervisors. Through innovative solutions, which enhances the research environment in Sharjah, and this vital road serves many of the investments adjacent to it. Many mega projects are being developed on this road, increasing the number of users and making it important to think about innovative solutions to deal with these expansions and in cooperation with different entities.
During the final workshop, the participants emphasized the importance of the skills acquired through during the month-long series, not only were the sessions innovative but the project challenged their process of creative thinking, made them create prototypes and live test them. SRTI Park and SAP have credited AUS students as the key element in making this project a success, by devising solutions and from various faculties.
The project aimed at providing an environment conducive to creativity and innovation. By creating an attractive and sustainable infrastructure, it will support and develop the innovation system to enhance Sharjah's status as a global destination in the fields of research and development.
