Saudi Arabia will soon issue tenders for a major transport project linking key cities in its Eastern flank, the Gulf Kingdom’s Transport Minister was quoted on Monday as saying. 

Saleh Al-Jassir said his Ministry is working with the Sharqia Development Authority (SDA), which is in charge of development plans in the Eastern region, to undertake that project  as part of a long-term scheme to expand the country’s land, air and sea links. 

The Saudi Arabic language daily Almadina quoted Al-Jassir as saying during a meeting at Sharqia Chamber of Commerce that the project covers nearly 455 kilometers (km) of roads and the operation of 85 buses to transport at least 3 million passengers per year. 

“We are cooperating with SDA to issue tenders for the coastal transport project in the Eastern region soon,” the Minister said. 

He did not provide project details but said it is part of  a transport plan in the Eastern region, involving the expansion of Ihsa airport to boost capacity from 400,000 to 700,000 passengers a year, adding that the project is already under way.
