MANAMA: The modernisation of Bahrain Airport Services (BAS) is in full swing as per the strategic plan, chief executive Salman Al Mahmeed has said.

The company is exploring new opportunities for the ground handling services market outside Bahrain, he added.

This is in line with plans aimed at keeping pace with unexpected changes in the aviation sector and the ongoing technological updates in all services provided, airport and ground operations, cargo services, catering services, aircraft maintenance services and BAS Aircraft Engineering Training Centre.

Mr Al Mahmeed said this is also part of BAS’ commitment to achieving and maintaining Bahrainisation rate of more than 81 per cent.

He added that these updates are aligned with the global policies and guidelines adopted by the International Air Transport Association and the International Air Transport Organisation.

He said this is part of the company’s initiative to contribute to the development and strengthening of the company’s position at the local and regional level.

He also pointed out during his meeting with the executive team about the importance of updating the strategic plan in line with the governmental direction to achieve the growth of the national economy under Economic Vision 2030, especially since the focus in 2020 will be on the modernised airport and its global impact in order to enhance Bahrain’s global position.

In addition, Mr Al Mahmeed also reviewed the new opportunities that can be approached to provide excellence in ground handling services, including the most important initiatives that have been implemented in this regard, he pointed at BAS new development company called BDC, which is one of the most important objectives of entering new local, regional and global markets.

BAS was founded in 1977 and has a 42-year long proven track record as the sole operator of ground handling services at Bahrain International Airport since then.
