Bahrain International Airport is set to enter into its next phase of development with the operational readiness and airport transfer (ORAT) procedure set to begin on the new passenger terminal building later this month, said senior officials of Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) at a key meeting.

The board of directors of Gulf Air Holding Group (GFG), Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) and Gulf Aviation Academy (GAA) were meeting for the first time in 2019 under the chairmanship of Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, at the GFG’s headquarters in Muharraq.

Following the revision and approval of the minutes of the previous meeting, the board discussed important items scheduled previously, including final reports on 2018 and the budget proposal for the coming year, in addition to the board committee reports.

During the meeting, the board stressed the importance of the next stage, ORAT, - which is a major achievement for the Airport Modernisation Programme (AMP) - in light of Bahrain’s aviation sector experiencing a rapid growth in both aircraft traffic and passengers.

According to the latest Civil Aviation Affairs statistics, the passenger numbers surged to over 9 million last year and aircraft departures and arrivals added up to 96,000.

The board also discussed GAA’s plans for expansion through the addition of modern equipment and the introduction of new aviation and logistics training programmes aimed at achieving GFG’s vision and GAA’s strategy for the development of the logistics training in the kingdom.

Speaking at the meeting, Kamal bin Mohammed lauded the board members for their dedicated efforts in promoting initiatives to develop the country's civil aviation sector.

The minister stressed that the efforts of companies operating in the aviation sector need to be consistent with the kingdom’s economic development plans by helping to increase the government’s non-oil revenues.

He commended the members of the executive management on their efforts to prepare the new building for the ORAT, adding that this represents a very important stage and a major achievement for the AMP.

"By the end of this month, it will be three years since the inauguration in 2016 of the AMP. With our strategic partners' co-operation and continued support, we have made excellent progress and announced outstanding achievements thanks to the commitment of all parties involved in this national development project," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
