Bahrain - Airlines using Bahrain International Airport (BIA) will be provided with more and improved services with the construction of a new complex.
The BD1.7 million engineering complex, spread over an area of 11,000sqm, houses several departments of Bahrain Airport Services (BAS) related to aircraft maintenance and logistics.
The new structure is part of BIA’s $1.1 billion modernisation project.
“Five departments were transferred from the airport yard – the aircraft maintenance, workshop and ground equipment maintenance department, logistics and procurement department, project management, facilities and maintenance department, as well as the workshops and the BAS training hangar, including all warehouses,” said BAS chief central support officer Fahad Al Qadi.
“The location (of the building) was chosen because it is far away from the current ongoing construction work, in response to the requirements of the Bahrain International Airport Expansion Project and within BAS strategy to develop its internal operations.”
Mr Al Qadi stated BAS has been developing its strategy to improve its internal operations in the central support sector for almost a year and has launched about 30 initiatives to be implemented over a two-year time-frame.
He also stressed the company’s keenness to exploit and manage the resources available efficiently with the primary goal of maintaining the capital of the company and the development of equity of its shareholders.
In terms of developing its human resources, Mr Al Qadi said over BAS has studied the policies and administrative systems related to human resources, including the development of standards of promotions and training.
The company boasts about 80 per cent Bahrainisation of which 72pc is in executive management positions.
The GDN reported last year that 40pc of construction work on BIA’s $1.1bn modernisation project has been completed. The airport serves around 9m passengers a year, but with the expansion the number is expected to increase up to 14m.
The airport’s modernisation project which includes a new terminal will see the number of check-in counters and passenger loading bridges doubled, while retail and commercial outlets are also due to triple in size.
