AMMAN Deputising for Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abul Saud, Jordan Valley Authority Secretary General Ali Kouz on Tuesday inaugurated the northern water pipeline project valued at 6.4 million euros.

The project aims to increase the flow of water for irrigation in the northern Aghwar region of Jordan, according to a Water Ministry statement.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Gianmatteo Arena, deputy to the EU ambassador to Jordan and representative of the German Development Bank, in addition to a number of officials from the water sector and the projects beneficiaries, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The pipeline project is one of the Ministry of Water and Irrigations priority projects, established in cooperation with the Jordan Valley Authority and funding countries, Kouz said.

He added that the pipeline will contribute to improving water supply by providing water treated in plants in Irbid using the highest standards possible.

A new pipeline will be constructed and the project also includes the rehabilitation of a pumping station, in addition to the implementation of the supervisory control and data acquisition system, which will contribute to increasing water flow, Petra reported.

Kouz expressed his appreciation for the EUs support to such vital projects, which enhance the water situation in Jordan, especially for farmers within the Jordan Valley.

During the inauguration, Arena stressed the EUs commitment to supporting water sustainability in Jordan through development projects, in addition to expanding dialogue with decision makers.

Arena pointed to Jordan-EU cooperation within the water sector as a benchmark for bilateral cooperation.

At the end of the event, Arena distributed 30 devices to farmers to measure salinity and acidity.
