Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The eighth edition of the Middle East Banking Innovation Summit, with IBM as Title Sponsor got underway today. Organized by global conference organizers, Expotrade, the two-day event covers over 45 subject matter experts delve deep into discussions on the latest trends, developments and emerging technologies in the banking sector in the region. Through a combination of keynote presentations, fireside chats, panel discussions, and case studies, the two-program agenda will focus on a wide range of topics related to the impact of technology in the banking sector with an emphasis on the challenges faced.

For the first time, the Middle East Banking Innovation Summit will host roundtable discussions after the conference sessions, with topics on Building blocks to World Class Financial Solutions in the UAE, Scaling digital-Moving from strategy to execution, The Future of Collaborative Finance, Getting the most out of Machine Learning and AI in Banking, and Disruptive innovations in the banking industry.

International speaker Pedro Pinto Coelho, Chairman and Chief Executive, BANCO BNI EUROPA delivered the opening address on the topic Traditional Banks VS FinTech. He was followed by Naveed Minhas, Banking Industry Leader MEA, IBM Global Business Services, who presented on the topic Platform Banking - How to Disrupt the Market.

Another highlight of this year’s event was the fireside chat with Paolo Barbesino, Senior Vice President & Head of Multi-Channel Banking, Emirates NBD; Noman Rasheed, Chief Information Officer, Noor Bank; Naveed Minhas, Banking Industry Leader MEA, IBM Global Business Services and Nabilah Annuar, Editor, Banker Middle East. The discussions focused on how banks are adapting with the digital transformation processes underway, how the role of a CIO is contributing to transformation in the UAE banking sector and on concepts such as open banking, amongst others.

The panel discussion on mobile banking’s impact on branch-based banking saw subject matter experts Aref Al Ramli, SVP, Head of Digital Banking & Innovation, Mashreq; Harish Vaidyanathan, Vice President - Product Marketing, Vymo; Marwan Hadi, Head of Retail Banking and Wealth Management UAE, HSBC Bank Middle East Ltd; Philip King, Global Head of Retail Banking, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank; and Ravikiran M A, Head - Digital Banking and Innovation, Union National Bank engage in a discussion on how the rise of challenger banks and e-wallets is posing a threat to the traditional banking models and affecting the industry.

Daragh O’Byrne, Global Head, Marketing and Alliances, Nucleus Software shared the company’s views on the next phase in the revolution in financial services at a session titled “Transforming Financial Services Beyond Digital”. He shared insights on how to redefine customer experience when everybody goes digital, leverage artificial intelligence (AI), bots and analytics to differentiate offerings and accelerate the digital revenue.
