Kuwait likely to award major substations contract in Q1

Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) is expected to award the main construction contract for its $165 million Mina Al Ahmadi Refinery substations project in the first quarter, a source close to the project said.

"The main construction contract is expected to be awarded by the end of February 2020," the source said.

The tender was released on 8 July 2019 with a bid submission deadline of 24 September 2019.

The source said the deadline was extended thrice with 29 December 2019 being the latest but didn't give the reasons for the extension.

Meanwhile, the project's original completion schedule of October 2023 remains unchanged, a second source said.

The scope of work, he continued, involves the construction of 14 substations with associated equipment and systems, adding that estimated total project value is around $165 million.

The new substations will replace old substations that have been deemed "old and obsolete" by KNPC," the first source added.

Prequalified bidders include Al-Ahleia Switchgear Co, China Sinopec, Fluor Corporation, Larsen & Toubro, Petrofac, SNC Lavalin Engineering Company, Enppi Engineering Company, and IMCO, officials from four companies confirmed.

Amec Foster Wheeler has been mandated as design, infrastructure and project management consultant for the project, the first source said.
