Iraq has approved $60 million for the reconstruction of a government cement plant in the South central Najaf governorate, the local media reported on Thursday.

Work on the "rehabilitation and rebuilding" of the Kufa Cement Plant will begin shortly once the funds are released in the next few days, Sumer News said.

"The Finance Ministry has approved $60 million for this project...the funds will be released in the next few days," it said, quoting Fadhil Al-Fatlawi, a member of the Parliament's Labour and Social Affairs Committee.

He said the project is part of a government plan to reconstruct all war-damaged factories in the Arab OPEC member, adding that it would ensure the governorate's cement needs in the coming years.

Fatlawi did not mention the current output capacity of the plant, which has been affected by internal hostilities in Iraq over the past few years. The plant was built more than 40 years ago with a designed capacity of 180,000 tonnes per year.
