Muscat - Haya Water is currently working on the trial operation of Barka Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Expansion Project with additional capacity of about 6,000 m3/ day. The STP is designed to accommodate the needs of this area for the wastewater treatment services and takes into account population growth and the development that the area will witness in the future. The project also consists of wastewater network that serves, in its initial phase, approximately 1,350 residential units and governmental and commercial properties.
Eng Saud bin Nasser al Shaithani, Sr Manager of Operation & Maintenance in the governorates said: “Haya Water started the trial operation of the new expansion of Barka STP and its additional units last July.” There are currently more than 1,150 residential units and governmental and commercial properties that are connected to the wastewater network, and Haya Water is following up new connection applications to be executed, respectively. The wastewater network project will directly contribute to the protection of groundwater, public health and environment. Moreover, treated effluent will be utilised in agriculture, afforestation, productive farming and plantation and other industrial and commercial purposes.
Haya Water signed an agreement with Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources on July 15th, 2015 to manage, operate and maintain all wastewater facilities in the governorates except Dhofar, as well as to supervise all implemented projects. The Company also evaluates different proposals for the rehabilitation and upgrading of the capacities for a number of STPs separately by building pre-equipped plants or natural treatment plants to accommodate all sewage received from municipal slaughterhouses and fish markets and oils from garages and automobile laundries.
Haya Water also seeks to find a strategy to utilise the excess of treated effluent through immediate solutions that does not exceed 8 months of implementation or short-term solutions with total period range of 8 months to 2 years, maximum. However, the company introduces long-term solutions when implementing the master plans of its major projects in the governorates outside Muscat.
