BERLIN, Aug 21 (Reuters) - The German government has no preferred bidder to take over the assets of insolvent Air Berlin, an Economy Ministry spokesman said on Monday.

The comments contradicted remarks by Economy Minister Brigitte Zypries who was quoted by the German daily Handelsblatt as backing Lufthansa's LHAG.DE bid to take over substantial Air Berlin assets.

"Air Berlin is leading the negotiations," the spokesman said. "The government is not at the table. And the government is neither for nor against any of the interested parties."
