Dubai: The Dubai Sports Council (DSC) launched an smart application on the annual Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award on Monday.

The new application for the award was launched by Mattar Al Tayer, Deputy Chairman, DSC and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the award, Khalid Ali Bin Zayed, Secretary-General of the award and Nasser Aman Al Rahma, Manager of the award.

The new application, designed to serve the award’s nominees, will provide the latest news, information and procedures, including registration in the nomination system, submitting nomination files and downloading all necessary documents related to the award.

The application also comprises a smart voting service for nominees, that will be added once the voting commences, so that public can participate and interact with nominees.

The initial stage of the smart application will provide services in the android and IOS operating systems, and these can be easily downloaded through smart phones and tablets.

Two new categories and an increase in the total cash allocation were among the additions to the 2016 Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award when nominations for the eighth edition were announced at the end of March this year.

Launched in May 2007 by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council (DSC), the annual awards honour individuals, teams and establishments in three categories — namely the UAE, the Arab world and international sports arena.

Last year’s award were won by Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, the wife of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Prince Nawaf Bin Faisal Bin Fahad Bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia and the International Judo Federation (IJF).

The award has allocated Dh500,000 for the newly-included category for National Paralympic Committees, while setting up a special award for the best initiative in the sports creativity and scientific research segment.

After undergoing all due processes of accepting entries, and the judging, the awards will be presented to the individuals and sports bodies at a special function to be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) on January 11, 2017.

The committee had also decided to have an extended deadline of September 20 to accept entries and applications considering that sportspersons and bodies have been busy with the Rio de Janeiro Olympics and Paralympic Games.
