Dubai-UAE: The Emirates Institute for Banking and Financial Studies (EIBFS), a regional leader in banking and finance education and training, hosted a webinar titled "Green finance: Is the future going to be green?" in which experts examined various types of sustainable finance being used in various parts of the world and explored the factors that make green finance appealing to individuals and businesses.

The expert panel included Simon Thompson, Chief Executive of Chartered Banker Institute, UK and author of “Green and Sustainable Finance, Principles and Practice”; Belinda Scott, Vice President and Head of Corporate Sustainability, First Abu Dhabi Bank, UAE; and Mervyn Tang, CFA, Senior Director, Global Head of ESG Research, Sustainable Finance, Fitch Ratings, Hong Kong. The session was moderated by Dr. Allen Baby, Head of the Center for Training at EIBFS.

The webinar, which drew 108 participants, addressed some fundamental questions about green finance, emphasising its role in advancing sustainable development and shedding light on how to measure the impact of green finance using indicators and metrics used in the region and globally. Participants discussed how institutions can meet intergenerational needs and how the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals provide a framework for understanding the broad scope of sustainability and sustainability finance.

Talking about the importance of the event, Jamal Al Jassmi, General Manager of EIBFS, said:

“In the last decade, green finance has emerged as an important tool to tackle the environmental threats associated with climate change and a prerequisite for sustainable development. The Covid-19 outbreak has drawn additional attention to green finance as an economic mechanism for creating healthy living environments.”

Al Jassmi expressed hope that the webinar will benefit participants from the financial sector. “As a leading training institute in the UAE, we believe that one of the best ways to learn is through conversation and interaction. This webinar seeks to achieve just that by providing a platform to foster learning through conversation among the participants and experts,” he added.
