Dubai, UAE: More than 90,000 patients benefited from the services provided by the Dubai Health Authority’s (DHA) Specialised Healthcare Services Sector.
The Specialised Healthcare Services Sector currently includes six specialised healthcare centres: Thalassemia Centre, Dubai Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Centre, Dubai Cord and Blood Research Centre, Dubai Diabetes Centre, Dubai Gynaecology & Fertility Centre and the Complimentary Centre.
Dr Ahmed Bin Kalban, the CEO of Specialised Healthcare Services Sector at DHA revealed that the majority of the 90,360 patients visited the Dubai Diabetes Centre (37,476) followed by the Dubai Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Centre (25,494), Dubai Gynaecology & Fertility Centre (11,563), Thalassemia Centre (8,514)), the Complimentary Centre (5,177) and the Dubai Cord and Blood Research Centre (2,136) respectively.
“It’s the Specialised Healthcare Services Sector’s utmost priority to provide quality specialised and super specialised healthcare to meet the needs of the people of Dubai. We are continuously working on developing and expanding our patient centric-care services, which is we are adding five new centres to the sector,” said Dr Bin Kalban.
Dr Bin Kalban announced earlier that the DHA plans to open five new speciality centres to meet the growing demand for specialised services in Dubai. These include: Two new dialysis centres, a new long-term patient health facility, a new fertility centre, a new complimentary medicine centre
He added that the sector aims to enhance customer’s treatment journey to ensure quality services that are in line with the Dubai 2021 strategy and to exceed patients’ expectations by planning, supervising and monitoring DHA’s specialised centres and developing their preventive, rehabilitation and treatment services.
Dr Bin Kalban revealed that the most sought out services at the Dubai Diabetes Centre in 2018 were the services provided by the adult diabetes clinic, which received around 11,332 visits last year. Meanwhile, 9,316 benefited from the health education provided at the centre, 5,925 benefited from dietician services, 3,791 visited the centre for retinal examination and 3,577 visited for podiatrist services. The remaining visited the centre for pediatrician diabetes services, physical exercise clinic, and behavioral therapy respectively.
The majority of Dubai Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre’s 25,494 visitors in 2018 where adults who seeked the centre’s services (15,089). Meanwhile 4,917 visited the centre for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) services and 2,964 patients visited for pediatric therapy.
The remaining patients visited the centre for hydrotherapy, occupational therapy, orthotics, and psychology therapy respectively.
In the Dubai Gynecology and Fertility Centre, the majority visited for Ultra sound images (8,041) and main fertility services and surgeries (1,584) as well as freezing and storing eggs (346). The centre’s main fertility services include vitro fertilization (IVF) operations, intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and freezing eggs, to name a few. The centre also had 673 new patients in 2018 and 919 repeat patients.
The top three services sought out by patients who visited the DHA’s Thalassemia Centre were blood transfusion and exchange transfusion services (6,053), services provided by the hemoglobinopathy clinic (1,037) and Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) services (573).
Other clinics visited by patients in 2018 at the Thalassemia Centre include but are not limited to the Post Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic, Gynecology Clinics, and Pediatrics Endocrine Clinics.
Meanwhile, the Dubai Complimentary Medicine Centre received 5,177 visitors and the majority seeked the services if the ozone clinic (3,465), metatrone clinic (571) and Bio-resonance clinic (1,141).
Finally, in 2018 the Dubai Cord Blood and Research Centre visitors received Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing and umbilical cord banking.

About the Dubai Health Authority:
The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) was created, in June 2007, by Law 13 issued by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, with an expanded vision to include strategic oversight for the complete health sector in Dubai and enhance private sector engagement.
Prior to the establishment of the DHA, the Department of Health and Medical Services, which was established in 1973, was the functioning authority that almost exclusively focused on health service delivery.
In May 2018, H.H Sheikh Mohammed, issued Law No. (6) Of 2018 of the DHA. The new Law further enables the DHA to achieve its objectives including regulating medical services in Dubai, enhancing competiveness and transparency, improving medical services and products based on international best practices and achieving the sector’s objectives according to approved strategic plans.
According to the Law, DHA will ensure the availability of quality medical insurance programmes, improve medical services according to the highest international standards, contribute to providing attractive infrastructure for investments, boost Dubai’s position as a global hub for medical tourism and medical education, encourage innovation in the healthcare sector and improve preventive healthcare measures.
The Law specified DHA’s responsibilities to include preparing a comprehensive strategic plan for Dubai’s healthcare sector, conducting studies and surveys to define Dubai’s future needs and matching the results with future investments, licensing and monitoring medical workers and medical facilities according to DHA’s approved regulations. Its responsibilities also include regulating medical education and medical research in collaboration with competent local and international authorities and drafting and developing policies and procedures for the healthcare sector in Dubai.
The Law authorises DHA to regulate and approve the prices of medical services offered by private healthcare facilities in Dubai and ensure the quality of medical services. DHA is also responsible for regulating and facilitating the sending of patients for specialised medical treatment to healthcare facilities both within and outside the country, regulating and overseeing medical tourism in collaboration with concerned authorities, managing and developing policies that govern medical insurance and regulating medical advertising in Dubai.
H.H Sheikh Mohammed also issued Decree No. 17 of 2018 establishing subsidiaries of the DHA: the Dubai Healthcare Corporation and Dubai Health Insurance Corporation to further enhance healthcare services in Dubai and enable DHA to fulfil its responsibilities and obligations.
Three new strategic sectors were also added as part of the decree; they include Strategy and Corporate Development, Health Regulation, and Shared Support Services.
In addition to overseeing the health sector for the Emirate of Dubai, the DHA also focuses on providing services through DHA healthcare facilities including Latifa, Dubai, Rashid and Hatta Hospitals, its 12 primary healthcare centres, 17 medical fitness centres and its 6 specialty centres.
