MANAMA: Measures to further reduce waiting time at the country’s main public hospital were reviewed at a high-level meeting, reports Raji Unnikrishnan.

Establishing private clinics in line with the government’s national health insurance plan at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) and improving services at its pharmacy were among the plans tabled at the meeting of the board of trustees of governmental hospitals.

The virtual meeting also took stock of the latest services at SMC which included the expansion of its accident and emergency unit.

It was chaired by board chairman Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulaziz Al Khalifa and attended by Government Hospitals’ chief executive Dr Ahmed Al Ansari and members of the board.

“(The meeting reviewed) the expansion of the emergency and accident department in the SMC to raise the current capacity from 76 beds to 115, which means adding 39 beds to the current number, and increasing the number of beds in the recovery room from eight to 16,” said a statement from Dr Al Ansari’s office. “In addition, four rooms were set aside for major operations, increasing the capacity from 13 to 17 rooms, and thus help in reducing waiting time and providing better services to patients.”
