Bahrain's Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunication (MTT) issued on Tuesday a prequalification invite for the first phase of the 109-kilometre-long Bahrain Metro project.

In a statement posted on the Tender Board's website, MTT said the four-phase project would be procured as an integrated Public-Private Partnership (PPP) through a two-stage process comprising of pre-qualification followed by the main tender.

The selected company/consortium will design, build, finance, operate, maintain and transfer the fully automated, driverless metro railway system, according to the statement.

The full project is estimated to cost between $1 billion and $2 billion, according to past statements from MTT.

The deadline for the submission of prequalification documents is 2 March 2022, and their opening date is 3 March 2022, the statement said.

Phase 1, which will extend for 29 km will comprise of two lines and 20 stations. The Red Line will link Bahrain International Airport with the suburban Seef District through the Bahrain Financial Harbour, serving 9 stations, according to a statement posted on the website of Egis, the project's technical consultant. The Blue Line will commence from the Juffair suburb and go through the Diplomatic Area before finishing at Isa Town, serving 11 stations. Egis said Phase 2 will add further two  lines with a total length of 90.4 km.

On 23 November, Zawya Projects had reported that SNC Lavalin is the lowest bidder for Bahrain Metro consultancy tender for utilities diversions of metro corridor.
