Iraq has shelved many housing projects in the capital Baghdad due to curfews and supply shortages caused by the spread of COVID-19, the official Arabic language daily Alsabah reported on Wednesday.

It quoted Baghdad Investment Commission's Chairman Shakir Al-Zamli as saying 26 projects were underway in the capital, providing more than 30,000 houses.

He said work is progressing in 10 projects while the remaining projects have been suspended because of lack of building material supplies and the difficulty of movement by workers due to the curfews imposed in some areas due to the pandemic.

"We have completed 30-90 percent of those 10 projects but the remaining projects have been halted...we are working with the competent authorities to restart those projects once the curbs imposed after the spread of COVID-19 are eased," he said.
