993,000 pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia for the annual haj so far, an increase of 22.5 percent compared to the same period last year, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) citing the General Directorate of Passports.

95 percent, equivalent to 946,182, arrived by air, 43,114 by land, and 3,583 by sea. 

The first pilgrims arrived in Saudi on July 24.

Last year a total of 1,826,909 pilgrims performed the haj, according to data from Saudi’s General Authority for Statistics. Around 71 percent, or 1,325,372, were foreign pilgrims.

Saudi’s ministry of haj and umrah estimates 1.8 million pilgrims this year.
