Al-Salem Johnson Controls to build cold stores for vaccines in Saudi Arabia

Al-Salem Johnson Controls, a provider of integrated solutions in HVAC-R, fire, safety and security systems, and building management systems in Saudi Arabia, has extensive experience in the field of industrial refrigeration and the implementation of cold store projects. The company stated that it is offering its expertise to support the health sector and pharmaceutical companies in equipping industrial cold stores with the latest technologies, through systems that ensure temperatures set by vaccine manufacturers.

The company operates a number of large projects in various sectors across the Kingdom. These include logistics centers, refrigeration warehouses, meat and poultry factories, storage facilities for fruits and vegetables, processed food factories, water and beverages factories, and medicine and dairy plants.

Among the companies that use Al-Salam Johnson Controls’s refrigeration solutions in their cold stores are: Shahini Holding Group in Riyadh, Transmed Distribution Company, Naqel Express, Al-Rabie Saudi Foods Company, and three dairy and ice cream factories of the Saudi Dairy and Food Company (SADAFCO).

Building an industrial cooling system requires a thorough study of the project’s facilities, nature of the work taking place there, and determining whether the system will be used to cool the facility or production lines or both. Therefore, as a first step, industrial refrigeration engineers at Al-Salem Johnson Controls visit and study the site from all aspects, and then design and develop a system according to its cooling requirements.

A-Salem Johnson Controls was established 29 years ago as a result of a strategic partnership between Al-Salem Group of Companies and Johnson Controls International. The joint venture has enabled Al-Salem Johnson Controls to equip itself with the latest technologies in the fields of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and building control systems.

Johnson Controls International was recently part of a team designing, developing and implementing a cold store at the Danish Odense University Hospital. The company merged two industrial cooling systems that use ammonia and methane, to reach the required cooling of the warehouse, spread across an area of 352 square meters.

The system can reach a temperature of -80 degrees Celsius, which is close to the temperature needed to preserve and store COVID-19 vaccines. The system uses SABROE coolers, a global provider of industrial refrigeration solutions, under the umbrella of Johnson Controls International.

One of the industrial cooling systems offered by Al-Salem Johnson Controls, uses ammonia gas as a cooling medium, and is used for applications requiring a cooling capacity of -45 degrees Celsius. For applications requiring lower temperatures, a combination of ammonia and methane is used.
