Iraq has approved plans to build 18 new residential cities after completing 9 cities in various governorates in the past few years, the official daily Alsabah said on Thursday.

A post-war housing programme to provide one million units to citizens comprises two stages, the second of which will be launched in 2021, the paper said, quoting Hassan Majham, engineering adviser at the Construction and Housing Ministry.

"Phase 2 of this programme involves building 18 new cities in various governorates...we have requested approval from the Justice Ministry for land allocation," he said.

The paper said one of those projects includes the construction of 10,000 houses in the Western Alanbar province, Iraq's largest governorate.
