Iraq and Jordan have agreed with General Electric (GC) of the United States to complete a project to link their power grids within one year, an Iraq official was reported on Tuesday as saying.

GE signed a $1.2 billion contract with Iraq in 2020 to maintain and upgrade key power installations in the Arab country and to connect its electricity network to that of nearby Jordan as part of a post-war strategy to rebuild its badly damaged infrastructure.

Iraqi Electricity Ministry spokesman Ahmed Al-Abadi, quoted by the official daily Alsabah, said the contract with GE stipulated that it completes the link with Jordan in 26 months.

"But after a recent visit to Baghdad by the Jordanian Energy Minister, a new contract with signed allowing for shortening that period to one year," he said.

Abadi also said a planned connection with power grids in neighbouring Kuwait and other Gulf oil producers would be ready in June 2022, adding that it would initially supply the Southern port of Basra with 500 MW of electricity.
