Sharjah: The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI) organized this Sunday, in collaboration with Sharjah Police and Sharjah Municipality, an introductory workshop entitled “Sharjah Light”.
The workshop is part of the first phase of the road lighting initiative, which will be carried out in a number of the emirate roads, with an aim of fostering road safety measures and curbing crime rate across the emirate.
The workshop aimed at introducing more than 150 representatives from the consultant engineers and contractors to the importance of external lighting of existing and under-construction buildings.
Held at the SCCI headquarters, the event was attended by HE Mohammad Ahmed Amin Al Awadi, SCCI’s Director-General, Lt Colonel Ahmed Al Marri, director of Community Police Department in Sharjah Police, Eng. Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al Jarwan, Director of Building Inspection Department (BID) at Sharjah Municipality, and Ibrahim Rashid Al Jarwan, Director of Economic Relations and Marketing at the SCCI.
Also present were Saeed Ghanem Al Suwaidi, Chairman of the Representative Committee of the Real Estate Sector Business Group, Amjad Awad al Karim, Head of the Working Groups at SCCI, and Lt-Col Jassim Al Suwaidi, Head of the Community Police Department and supervisor of the inspection,
An Initiative with Social, Security and Economic Aspects
HE Mohammad Ahmed Amin Al Awadi commended the efforts exerted by Sharjah Police, Sharjah Municipality and the Representative Committee of the Real Estate Sector Business Group in terms of sponsoring this initiative, which has important social, security and economic aspects.
“Sponsoring such initiatives reflects the keenness on fostering the joint work to launch qualitative initiatives that meet the aspirations of the business community, in particular, that this initiative is targeting road lighting in a number of the emirate’s industrial areas,” Al Awadi underlined.
He added: “The SCCI is keen on enhancing the communication with various government sectors and following up the latest development which would help strengthen the business community achievements.”
The SCCI’s Director-General hailed the strenuous and constant efforts of Sharjah Police to ensure security stability, which is regarded as an essential factor in the economic prosperity and sustainable development.
“The SCCI is calling for companies to interact with the initiative, either through the implementation or the financial support as part of their social responsibility values and to reflect the actual meaning of partnership between all society segments to carry out any initiative that would help enhance the sense of security in the Emirate of Sharjah. This would also help achieve the objectives of the universal development and requirements of the National Agenda in terms of the sense-of-security indicator.” Al Awadi concluded.
Supporting Economic Sector
For his part, Lt. Col. Ahmed Al Marri reaffirmed that the initiative comes in implementation of Sharjah Police’s objectives and in line with the Ministry of Interior’s vision to make the UAE one of the best countries of the world in terms of security and safety.
“The road lighting initiative will undoubtedly realize many benefits and will enhance the sense of comfort and convenience, in addition to supporting the economic sector through helping protect commercial property. It will also have positive outcomes, reduce crime rates and improve the level of safety, which is one of the most important pillar for attracting investment” Al Marri added.
He expressed his thanks to the SCCI and Sharjah Municipality for adopting and sponsoring this initiative, stressing that the leadership will spare no efforts to strengthen partnerships and cooperation among various public and private entities to expand the geographical scope of the initiative, and ensure its implementation in all dark areas and streets of the emirate.
He also called on proprietors and shop owners to cooperate with Sharjah Police by ensuring their facilities are well-lit and equipped with surveillance cameras, which would help fight crime and protect their property.
Modern Methods and Techniques
During the introductory workshop, Lt. Col. Jassim Al-Suwaidi delivered a presentation on the initiative, highlighting that road lighting will not be done in the traditional way, but streets will be illuminated using modern methods and techniques including solar energy, low-consumption and smart lamps.
He outlined that the use of such an advanced lighting system will save cost, time and efforts wasted to dig roads and connect cables, thanks to the ease of installation. “The initiative will be gradually implemented in a number of streets and results will be measured by evaluative criteria. At later stage, the initiative will cover all streets and areas of the Sharjah”, Al-Suwaidi concluded.
