Beirut: Berytech, with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of The Netherlands in Lebanon, is organizing the second edition of the Agri-Food Innovation Day (AFID), in a virtual format on Thursday, October 1, 2020, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm Beirut time.

Hosted completely online, the event is open to agri-food industry leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, startups, investors, researchers, students, and visionaries who are invited to join from anywhere in the world to meet experts from across the entire agri-food value chain, network with new businesses and investors, build strategic partnerships, and fast-track the growth of their venture.

The first Agri-Food Innovation Day took place in 2019, hosting more than 1200 attendees and showcasing dozens of innovative agri-food solutions in Lebanon. The first event of its kind in Beirut gave the stage to local and international guest speakers and panelists to address eminent issues in the agri-food sector and startups who pitched award-winning solutions.

AFID 2020 brings the same vibrant energy in its virtual format. During the event, Berytech is hosting two (2) panel discussions, organizing a pitching session and is making available an open networking room.

Panel Discussions

The first panel titled ‘Cluster-Driven Circular Economy’ will be led by the team from QOOT Agri-Food Innovation Cluster in Lebanon, and will host speakers from around the world who will discuss the role of clusters in implementing principles of circular economy in recovering from the dilapidations of the economic crisis and pandemic. Participants will be incited to explore new strategies for transformation, hear voices from leading experts, take practical tips, and connect with members and partners from the QOOT Cluster.

The second discussion panel will tackle ‘Local & Regional Agri-food Challenges’ that have impeded the sector from evolving in the same force and rate as other technology-driven sectors. This panel will bring together national and international speakers, highlighting a unified vision for the agriculture sector among different stakeholders, improving food security, and optimizing practices for sustainability and innovation in the sector.

Pitching Session

The Pitching Session will have eight startups from the Agrytech Accelerator Program demonstrate their solutions for the first time to the public. The startups have been working hard for the last year to develop their solutions solving agri-food challenges across the entire value chain, using science and technology, with the plan to scale internationally.

Networking Platform

In parallel to ongoing activities, the AFID2020 Networking Platform will be open to connecting like-minded professionals, startup founders, investors, researchers, and students. The virtual networking room stimulates introductions, shared ideas, professional discussions, and industry talk.

ACT Smart Innovation Hub

The Virtual Agri-Food Innovation Day 2020 is organized under the ACT Smart Innovation Hub initiative, a new out-of-the-box approach by Berytech and co-funded by the Kingdom of The Netherlands, aimed at strengthening business advancement, economic growth and job creation in the Agri-food and Cleantech sectors in Lebanon.

The ACT Smart Innovation Hub initiatives runs over 36 months from September 2019 to August 2022. It includes two accelerator programs – Agrytech and Cleanergy, it aims to create 200 direct job opportunities and 400 indirect job opportunities with at least 50% linked to youth and 25% linked to women.

Through the innovation hub, Berytech continues its support of the QOOT Agri-Food Innovation Cluster, accompanying its members in their innovation strategies and competitiveness, ultimately leading to efficiency and quality exports from Lebanon.

Berytech is also working closely with Academia and research institutes on converting Intellectual Property (IP) into commercialized solutions. Berytech is also proposing policy reforms and establishing lobbying and coordination structures that will last beyond the lifetime of the initiative. All the above will be done using local Lebanese and Dutch know-how and expertise throughout the process.
